This is a more strenuous trail, designed primarily for active mountain bikers, but also for fresh cycling enthusiasts.

Starting in the centre of Baška, it will take you on a quite impressive uphill ride to the Moon Plateau, a rocky desert with a stunning view of the Baška Valley, the blue sea, and one of Baška’s symbols – the beach known as Vela plaža.

Before starting off, check the truly magical viewpoint in front of the Church of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the parish and municipality. Winding through the shaded pine forest, you will reach a Moon-like plateau. The strong bora wind and other forces of nature have created a mesmerising landscape, while the view of the Velebit mountain and nearby islands will stay in your memory for good. A deep connection between humans and nature is reflected in kilometres-long dry stone walls, along which flocks of sheep graze peacefully. Picturesque wells, sheepfolds known as ‘mrgari’ and terrace-shaped drystone walls, built using an ancient construction method, represent a prime example of the local architecture. After the rocky surface of the Moon Plateau, a meandering downhill ride to luscious vineyards and pastures will surely take your breath away.

Stop by at the Mošuna restaurant near Portafortuna for some refreshment before cycling back to Baška: first you will take the main road, and then ride down the off-road section along the Vela Rika stream.

As this is quite rightly the island’s most popular trail, mutual respect and consideration between hikers and cyclists is a must.
