Visit the north-eastern side of the island and open the door to the past. There are many churches and historical records in the Glagolitic script there to peek in and find out about the everyday life in the area.

An easy road trail starts in Šilo, where the island’s first steamboat company was founded. It is also the home port of the first ferry boat in the Adriatic. Passing Risika and Garica, you will climb constantly before reaching Kras, the highest village on the island. The trail continues through Rasopasno and Gabonjin, two villages with preserved local architecture and top-quality family accommodation.

Take a break in Gabonjin to learn a Glagolitic letter or two from old Glagolitic records. What follows is a descent to Soline, known for pre-Roman salt pans and medicinal mud, offering a view of the magical Crikvenica Riviera. Due to its geographical location, mild climate, sheltered cove and shallow sea, the bathing season starts as early as spring and lasts until late autumn, which is an extra reason for visiting.

Before returning to Šilo, make a stop in Klimno, a small tourist village famous for shipbuilding. If you happen to be visiting during a local festivity, you will most probably hear what sopile, a traditional wind instrument, sounds like. It is also a good idea to find a nice secluded spot by the sea, soak up the sun and enjoy the day to the fullest.
