CAMINI KRK – day 2: Brzac – Malinska
Walking the western side of the island through thick downy oak forests

The second chapter of the Camino story will introduce you to luscious oak forests and Krk’s rich historical legacy. Day two of the pilgrimage includes a 22.9-kilometre-long walk from the village of Brzac to Malinska on the western side of the island, sheltered from strong winds.
Your hiking adventure starts in Brzac, a charming old village off the coast with picturesque stone houses radiating with the Mediterranean charm. The path proceeds to Glavotok, a hamlet first mentioned as a summer residence (with a chapel) of the Frankopan Counts of Krk. After visiting the Franciscan monastery from the 15th century, you will walk through thick forests that surround Glavotok. While enjoying the view of Cres and turquoise coves, the path will lead you to a medieval Church of St Chrysogonus, a true gem of the island’s Romanesque architecture. Hidden deep in the forest, it reveals its beauty only to curious hikers and cyclists. You continue towards Malinska, whose history is closely linked to the nearby downy oak forests (’dub’ in Croatian). When you first spot the 400-year-old tree giant, you will probably feel a strong need to hug it. The fact that this huge ancient oak tree has stood there for centuries inspires awe. A stroll by the sea and partly through the forest leads to the viewpoint in the Fumak area, adorned by a monumental votive crucifix. Take a break there to enjoy the wonderful view of the Kvarner Bay and learn more about the inspiring story of Petar Trp. Working as a lumberjack in Australia, he suffered a serious arm injury. He erected a votive cross as a token of gratitude for his successful recovery. Upon reaching Porat, visit the Franciscan monastery of St Mary Magdalene, a complex comprising a church, a museum, an olive mill (called ‘toš’ by the locals), a collection of church artwork and archaeological exhibits, and a Glagolitic lapidarium, testifying to the religious, cultural and economic heritage of the Third Order of St Francis.
Surrounded by centuries-old olive groves, you will pass along a series of drystone walls and the old cemetery of St Apollinaire with an impressive bell tower made of stone. The last part passes through several villages of the Dubašnica area such as Sveti Anton, Milovčići and Kremenići, and ends in Malinska, the centre of the Malinska-Dubašnica Municipality.
