Omišalj – Fulfinum Mirine – Fortičina – Omišalj
The hiking trail from Omišalj to the Fulfinum Mirine archaeological site offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the area’s cultural and historical heritage in tandem with the island’s scenic beauty. Start exploring this part of Krk from Omišalj, a picturesque town steeped in the past, whose rich cultural and historical heritage is visible at every corner. Located on an 85-metre-high cliff, it reveals narrow stone streets, rows of houses and numerous historical monuments.
After exploring the old town centre, head through Dubec Park towards the sea. This exceptional monument of landscape architecture from the first half of the last century features well-tended paths and resting spots with the scent of conifers, plants and fragrant flowers wafting in the air. Stop at one of the viewpoints and enjoy the panoramic views of the sea and all of Rijeka Bay.
Continue along the coastal promenade to Pesja Cove and on to Sepen Cove, where the Roman town of Municipium Flavium Fulfinum was established in the 1st century. The remains of the ancient municipium and an Early Christian basilica bear witness to the first settlement of this area and the way of life at that time. After a break at Mirine, continue towards the hill above Omišalj Bay, where you will come across the remains of the Fortičina fort. Its position, overlooking the harbour and the settlement, has been an important strategic point for centuries. The nearby spring provided water to both the people of Omišalj and those of ancient Fulfinum. The fort, built on the ruins of a late antiquity or early medieval watchtower, also provides information about the castles of the noble Frankopan family of Krk, built during the late 12th and 13th centuries.
The hiking trail from Omišalj to the Fulfinum Mirine archaeological site offers the perfect combination of the area’s scenic beauty and rich history. This trail is ideal for families and recreational athletes who want to combine physical activity with cultural exploration.
