The quaint circular ‘Trail to Risika’ offers a 14-kilometre walk through the impressive history and stunning nature of the eastern coast of Krk Island. Starting from Vrbnik, one of the oldest town on the island, it offers breathtaking scenery, historic sites and hidden coves. Before embarking on this adventure, discover the rich heritage of Vrbnik, once the seat of the Counts of Krk, and learn about the Vrbnik Statute from 1388, one of the oldest legal documents written in the Croatian language.

The trail continues through the tame heart of the island towards the village of Risika, known for its impressive past and green landscapes. It was named after the local plants, either ‘risikovina’ or ‘vrijesak’ (heather species). Then follows a descent to Melska, a secluded and picturesque cove with a pebble beach and seabed covered in fine sand (‘melo’), ideal for a short break by the sea. Once you have rested, continue along the coast to Sv. Marak Cape, where you can admire the remains of the medieval Church of St Marak, which lent the site its name. Stop for refreshment in the stunning cove adorned with one of the rare sandy beaches on the island. On your way back, you will pass by Melska Cove again only to reach another one – Javna Cove. The scent of pines and the sound of the waves caressing the shore will accompany you on your way back to Vrbnik, where exploring the local sights will be a perfect end to an already perfect day.

This route is ideal for nature lovers and history buffs as it offers a combination of the cultural and natural heritage that makes Vrbnik and its surroundings so special.
